Westbury

This picturesque Tasmanian village was first established as a garrison town in the 1830s. Westbury has the look and feel of a traditional Georgian village with hedgerows and plenty of old-world charm. Despite its appearance as a traditional English village with a village green, thatched cottages and tree-lined streets, many of Westbury’s early settlers were actually from Ireland. The most spoken language in the town was Gaelic until late in the 19^th Century. Westbury still shows evidence of its Irish heritage with the annual St Patrick’s Day Festival, celebrating the town’s cultural heritage with song, dance and a parade.

There is a traditional village green with stunning Oak trees that’s great for a picnic on a warm summer’s day. Westbury has some lovely stately buildings, galleries and antiques and is host to the world’s largest collection of antique steam engines.

Westbury’s primary employer is Tasmanian Alkaloids which process Tasmanian grown poppies to produce a range of pharmaceutical products. Westbury is a great place to call into if you’re travelling between Launceston and Devonport.
