A Traditional Tasmanian Village with Irish Charm

What to do in Westbury Tasmania

This picturesque Tasmanian village was first established as a garrison town in the 1830s. Westbury has the look and feel of a traditional Georgian village with hedgerows and plenty of old-world charm. Despite its appearance as a traditional English village with a village green, thatched cottages and tree-lined streets, many of Westbury’s early settlers were actually from Ireland. The most spoken language in the town was Gaelic until late in the 19th Century. Westbury still shows evidence of its Irish heritage with the annual St Patrick’s Day Festival, celebrating the town’s cultural heritage with song, dance and a parade.
