Convict built buildings span Salamanca Place which is home to the weekly Salamanca Markets as well as much of the city’s vibrant nightlife. Arts and culture are big in Hobart too, with the Museum of Old and New Art (MONA) in the city being one of Tasmania’s most popular tourist destinations – and admission is free if you live in the state!
Hobart is a great place to uncover some of Tasmania’s history as you spend time wandering through the convict built sandstone buildings – such as the Cascade Brewery, with tours operating daily. Royal Tasmania Botanical Gardens
Established in 1818 by Lieutenant Governor William Sorrel, the gardens boast the longest surviving convict built brick wall in Australia and attracts over 400,000 visitors per year. Located at Lower Domain Road, Queens Domain, Hobart. Opening hours daily – Apr: 8am – 5:30pm, May – Aug : 8am to 5pm, Sep : 8am – 5pm, Oct – Mar : 8am – 6:30pm. Admission is by Gold Coin donation.
Mona – Museum of Old and New Art
Opened in 2011 it is located within the Moorilla Winery on the Berriedale Peninsula in Hobart. Mona is mostly built underground and houses over 400 works from David Walsh’s private collection. Address – 655 Main Road, Berriedale, Hobart. Opening hours – Wed – Mon 10am to 6pm, open every day in January. Admission $25 Adults, $20 Concession, Free for Tasmanian Residence and all visitors under the of 18.
The Tasmanian Museum & Art Gallery
This is the second oldest museum in Australia and attracts 300,000 visitors annually. Located on the famous waterfront at historic Dunn Place. Opening hours Tue – Sun 10am to 4pm. Admission is free.
Mount Wellington
The beautiful backdrop to Hobart, towering to 1270m. Wellington Park is accessed via Pillinger Drive and Pinnacle Road from Fern Tree. Important note – if using Google Maps or other Sat Nav devices, to make sure you go to the correct entrance, enter Mount Wellington, Wellington Park as your destination. Wellington Park is always open except for emergency closures i.e. poor weather conditions so please be mindful of visibility and icy conditions if you’re thinking about heading up. The observation shelter on the summit is open during the following times – Summer (daylight savings) 8am – 8pm, During Winter Months 8am – 4:30pm. Access to Wellington Park and Observation Shelter is free.
Salamanca Market
The historical precinct of Salamanca Place showcases convict built warehouses and dock buildings. Enjoy over 300 stalls featuring some of Tasmania’s finest craft, food and produce. Take in the sights, sounds and tastes that Tasmania’s premier market has to offer. Located at Salamance Place, Hobart. Opening hours – 8:30am to 3pm – Every Saturday except Christmas Day or ANZAC day should they fall on a Saturday. If this is the case the Market is held on the Sunday. Entry is free.
