Cradle Mountain

Cradle Mountain is one of Tasmania’s most iconic natural wonders. Towering over Dove Lake in the state’s Central Highlands, and accessible from the world-renowned Overland Track, Cradle Mountain is truly one of Tasmania’s greatest destinations. The mountain gets its name from its resemblance to a miner’s cradle – first noticed by explorer Joseph Florey in 1827. The climb up the mountain is no easy feat, and is recommended only for more experienced walkers. All of Cradle Mountain’s glory can be witnessed by seeing it over the pristine Dove Lake, accessible by car or shuttle bus from the visitor’s centre near Cradle Mountain.

Weindorfer’s Forest Walk takes you through an almost magical forest, and is just one of the great short walks in the area

The valleys of the Cradle Mountain Lake St Clair National Park were explored by Austrian botanist Gustav Weindorfer from 1909. He and his wife Kate spent many years opening up the area and famously stated of the area “This must be a national park for the people for all time, it is magnificent and people must know about it and enjoy it.” In 1971 Gustav got his wish when the area was declared a National Park now attracting over 200,000 visitors per year.

The Weindorfer’s Forest Walk, named in honour of Gustav and Kate, is an easy walk departing from Dove Lake suitable for all walkers. The walk takes you through an almost magical forest, and is one of many great short walks available from Dove Lake.

No matter what season you visit Cradle Mountain you will be awe struck by its beauty. In summer you can enjoy long walks with breathtaking views to the soundtrack of Tasmania’s untouched wilderness. In winter – provided access is available – you can nestle down in a warm cottage and enjoy tobogganing around the camp area or have a snow fight with the kids.
