Located on the far north west coast near the end of the Bass Highway, Smithton is one of the largest towns in the greater north west region. Settled in the 1870s as Duck River it was renamed in 1895 to its current name. Smithton’s primary industries throughout the years have typically been beef and dairy farming with secondary industries such as fisheries, crop farming and timber plantations also making a significant contribution to the local economy.

Smithton is a gateway to the popular Tarkine Wilderness area and is also a popular tourist destination in its own right due to its remoteness and the uniqueness of its blackwood swamp forest known as Dismal Swamp which is located just south-west of Smithton – also on the Bass Highway.

From Smithton you can easily take day trips to Marrawah, Stanley, Arthur River and the Tarkine
