Cradle Mountain &

Lake St Clair National Park Tasmania

Explorer Joseph Fossey, on seeing the resemblance that this mountain had to a cradle, called it Cradle Mountain in 1827. In 1831 Henry Hellier was the first European to reach the summit of the mountain.

The valleys of the Cradle Mountain Lake St Clair National Park were explored by Austrian botanist Gustav Weindorfer from 1909. He and his wife Kate spent many years opening up the area and famously stated of the area “This must be a national park for the people for all time, it is magnificent and people must know about it and enjoy it.” In 1971 Gustav got his wish when the area was declared a National Park now attracting over 200,000 visitors per year.

No matter what season you visit Cradle Mountain you will be awe struck by its beauty. In summer you can enjoy long walks with breathtaking views to the soundtrack of Tasmania’s untouched wilderness. In winter – provided access is available – you can nestle down in a warm cottage and enjoy tobogganing around the camp area or have a snow fight with the kids.
