New Norfolk is a vibrant town in the picturesque Derwent river valley and is 32kms (20 minutes) north-west of Hobart on the Lyell Highway. It is the third oldest town in Tasmania settled by free-settlers who were relocated when the Norfolk Island prison settlement was closed in 1807. These pioneers were resettled on land grants and the settlement was called New Norfolk in honour of their former home.
By 1860 the hop growing industry was getting established and New Norfolk became the centre of Tasmania’s hop industry. The unique shaped oast houses were built to process the hops which were used by the breweries.
New Norfolk is the town of antique shops so if you’re an antique buff and want to pick up some rare items while you’re on holiday in Tasmania New Norfolk is the place to go. There are also numerous boutique gift shops around the town and some lovely cafes and eateries if you’re looking for a nice meal.
